Lessons from The Hiding Place: Names for God

The story of The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom is taking us into dark territory as Corrie and her sister, Betsie, are arrested for their roles in the Dutch underground and sent to a concentration camp. It's a good time to remember that no matter how difficult the circumstance, God's power and love still reign over all things.

In response to the experiences related in the novel, the Eighth Graders are contemplating some of the Names of God:

Yahweh Shammah: The LORD is There

God is always there, showing joy in the littlest of things. (from Eli)

In the midst of suffering and hurt, God is there. When Corrie is in solitary confinement in prison she realizes that God is there, and she needs no one else, because God is there to strengthen and comfort her. (from Juli)

All the names of God could be used here but the one I think is most powerful here is Jehovah-Shammah. God is there. When the ten Booms are in trouble and need help, God is right there to help them; when Corrie is in confinement after her father dies, God is there for her to be comforted. God is ever present and will help. (from Andrew)

The name that I think of is Jehovah-Shammah. Jehovah is there. I think of this because God showed Corrie what was going to happen which tells me that God is working in our lives. He was present in Corrie’s life showing her that moment and preparing her for it. I think when you learn that almost all of her family members escaped also shows that God is working. The biggest reason I picked this is because Corrie says “You were there” when she learns the Jews escaped. I say this and it hit me God is there, helping us. (from Jaaron)

Yahweh Yirah: The LORD will Provide

In the story, Corrie did all the she could to help the Jews, and then she had to trust that God would do the rest.

I see God’s love and providence in how he provided for the ten Booms and how he provides for us. (From Gerrit)

El Roi: The God Who Sees Me

There are many times in the story where God saw the ten Boom’s and protected them. I see El Roi, the God who sees me, because in all circumstances, God is there and He sees us. (from Angela)

This name comes to mind because I feel like God is just protecting Corrie and is watching over her and her family and they all know that, so He takes away their fear. (from Taylor)

In these chapters, I think this means that God is always watching out for them. (from Jaclyn)

Yahweh Shalom: The LORD is Peace

The name that I think of during these chapters is Jehovah Shalom because even as the ten Booms were being tortured, they still had the peace that God would take care of them. They were afraid but were able to trust that either God would get them through that, or that they would go be with him in a better place. (from Maddie)

Deliverer
The name of Jesus that these chapters bring to mind is deliverer. I thought of deliverer, because in the rough time that Corrie was in during these chapters, God delivered her when she needed it, like when Nollie sent the package of things for her in prison. Also, when she went to the “clinic” and the nurse there gave her the four gospels even though it could be dangerous for Corrie to have them. (From Lydia H.)

There are so many lessons here for our lives.
Thank you, Eighth Graders, for reminding us of that!
